West of Ellingstring.....

To the west of Ellingstring one looks into Wensleydale, a dale that differs from the others by virtue of its wide flat basin with prominent hills on either side.

In addition to its stunning unspoilt beauty, Wensleydale offers up more than its fair share of the treasures to be found in the dales, including waterfalls, the largest natural lake in Yorkshire, outstanding views, castles and much more; all within a stones-throw of our home

This website could never provide all that Wensleydale holds, all that it can do is provide just the briefest glimpse. It is well worth exploring the Yorkshire Dales link on the last page to discover more, but please stay here awhile

From the steep lane leading away from Ellingstring one can see in the distance both Bolton Castle and Middleham Castle

Bolton Castle {left}, which sits alone on the northern side of the dale, was the venue for the the internment of Mary Queen of Scots and it is possible to wander the tended gardens free of charge, including the maze. A very special experience is to enjoy the stunning views from the gardens of Bolton Castle

Between Ellingstring and Bolton Castle are the ruins of Middleham Castle which dates from the 12th century and is where King Richard 3rd was raised

The area around Middleham is famed for its race horse training stables, with the horses being exercised several times a day on the surrounding downs
